2020 was a historic year for women in politics. More than ever, women were running for office and supporting campaigns in great waves. 583 women were candidates for the US House, a move reflective of a shift in society. Maybe America wasn’t ready to elect so many women, but we were able to support them in the decision to run. One small leap.
At the beginning of 2021, Trinity College senior Jaymie Bianca made the decision to run for local office. Sitting in her dorm, Bianca realized that she had the qualifications to make a difference in her community. Earning several degrees- one in education studies- Bianca began to prepare for the Board of Education election in the November election cycle.
“Life experience isn’t measured by age,” Bianca said. With support from her Trinity College community, family, and friends, she was ready.
It wasn’t an easy journey, Bianca shared. “It was definitely difficult reading some negative comments on social media,” she said, but notes that most were positive. An experience relatable for most young women, the hurtful comments impacted Bianca’s confidence. Nevertheless, she continued in a male-dominated field, surrounded by individuals typically older than her.
“Young women are a rarity in the world of politics, but don’t let this scare you. Let this motivate you,” Bianca said, hoping to see more women like her joining the campaign trail.
While Bianca, unfortunately, did not win her election, she received an impressive number of votes, following closely behind incumbent candidates. Despite it all, Bianca proved she is a force to be reckoned with- and she will be back.
Will you be joining her?
